CHICAGO -- October 24, 2000 -- The Copley Press, Inc. has announced the sale of its suburban Chicago subsidiary, Fox Valley Press, Inc., to Hollinger International Inc.

Based in Plainfield, Fox Valley Press publishes four paid daily newspapers, one paid thrice-weekly, 13 free community weekly newspapers (including the three editions of The Sun that originate in Plainfield) and one shopper.

Fox Valley is the leading publisher of newspapers serving seven fast-growing counties surrounding Chicago and Cook County. Built around the four dailies, whose origins date back more than 100 years, Fox Valley Press has expanded aggressively since 1996 to serve its fast-growing markets. The counties in its coverage area are projected to experience double-digit growth in population and households and are popular choices for Chicago's middle- and upper-class residents seeking top schools and prosperous communities.

The Copley Press, Inc., based in La Jolla, Calif., is a family-owned enterprise that has been in the newspaper business since 1905. Its largest newspaper is The San Diego Union-Tribune, which has been part of the company since 1928 and has daily circulation of 380,000. Copley also has dailies in Los Angeles and in the Central Illinois cities of Springfield, Lincoln, Peoria and Galesburg. It recently acquired The Repository, a 64,000 circulation daily in Canton, Ohio.
