MARKET OVERVIEW

Overseas markets are not normally as neutral as they appear this morning. Currently seven of the 15 markets that we track are positive and the cumulative average return on the group stands at a rather muted plus 0.158 percent. There is a divergence in the major European markets this morning with the FTSE 100 easily outpacing the France CAC 40 and the Frankfurt DAX. The FTIND may be receiving a boost from the UK mobile phone giant, Vodafone, which was trading higher by some 2.2 percent. VOD is one of the leading contenders in the bid for AT&T wireless. That bidding process will close this evening at 5:00 p.m. ET.

I would be surprised to see if any of the economic or earnings reports have an impact on this market today. At 8:30 a.m., the December International Trade Deficit is expected to have risen to $40.00 billion from November's $38.01 billion. Sharing the spotlight, January Import Prices are seen rising by 0.4 percent, accelerating from the prior month's 0.2 percent rise. At 10:00 a.m., the February Preliminary University of Michigan Consumer Confidence Survey is due out, but we already have the January retail sales numbers. The survey of 250 is seen at 104.0, ticking up from the 103.8 booked in January. Only a gravely downside surprise would seem to rock the market. Bond markets close one hour early at 2:00 p.m. in preparation for the Presidents' Day Observation.

DYNAMIC MARKET OPPORTUNITIES

How much longer will the US Federal Reserve leave interest rates unchanged? Many investors are wondering about its latest statement, which adopted a shift in policy. But Brit Ryle, chief trading strategist at the Money-Flow Matrix Trader, has it figured out. In fact, he just gave his traders a 40% overnight profit. Ryle says, "I keep reading the change in policy statement (from 'for a considerable period of time' to 'we can be patient') is insignificant. It's very significant! The Fed is saying interest rates are not tied to a timeline, but to economic conditions instead - that rates will stay low as long as needed. But Greenspan is prepping the markets for a rate hike and the warning signs are everywhere. OPEC announced cuts in oil production (inflationary). Momentum stocks like Sandisk and NetFlix are rolling over. Volume has been very light for the last two weeks. The 'accommodative interest rate environment' is coming to an end. I'm expecting a rate hike in late spring/early summer. For the trader, it's time to start looking for downside opportunities."
